In this guide we focus specifically on LPD door sizes, explaining what’s available, how UK sizing works and how to choose the right option for your space, whether you’re upgrading a single room or specifying doors for a multiplot site.

Understanding Standard UK Internal Door Sizes

Most homes in the UK are built around a set of established internal door dimensions and LPD Internal Doors designs its ranges to align closely with these standards. That’s why LPD doors are so widely used in both renovations and new-build projects.

The most common internal door height you’ll encounter is 1981mm (78 inches). This size suits the majority of traditional and modern homes and is often paired with widths such as:

  • 610mm - ideal for smaller rooms or cupboards
  • 686mm - a narrower option for compact spaces
  • 762mm - the most common internal door width in UK homes
  • 838mm - used where wider access is preferred

In newer properties, particularly contemporary developments with higher ceilings, you may also come across 2032mm (80 inch) high doors. LPD caters for these taller openings too, making it easier to maintain a consistent look throughout the home.

Why Door Height and Width Matter More Than You Think

Door sizing isn’t just about whether it fits the frame. Proportions play a big role in how a space feels too. Narrow doors can make rooms feel more enclosed, while wider doors improve flow and accessibility in busy areas like living rooms and hallways. Likewise, taller doors can subtly boost the sense of height in a room, which is why 80-inch doors have become increasingly popular in modern interiors.

When replacing doors, it’s always worth measuring the existing frame carefully rather than assuming a “standard” size. Even small variations can affect how much trimming is needed, or whether a particular model is suitable at all.

Door Thickness: What You Need to Know

Most standard LPD internal doors are supplied in a 35mm thickness, which is designed to work with standard UK door linings and ironmongery. This thickness strikes a good balance between weight, durability and ease of installation.

Specialist doors, such as fire doors, are thicker to accommodate their internal construction. When choosing a door, always check that the thickness matches your existing frame rebates, especially if you’re upgrading from older doors.

Trimming Allowances and Fitting Flexibility

One of the reasons LPD doors are so practical for refurbishment projects is their generous built-in trimming allowances. Most doors can be trimmed slightly to achieve a perfect fit, which is invaluable in older properties where openings aren’t always perfectly square.

That said, trimming is not unlimited. Each LPD door model has a specified maximum trimming allowance and exceeding it can compromise the door’s structure or performance. This is particularly important with fire doors, where trimming beyond the stated limits can affect the fire rating.

The key takeaway? Trimming is there to fine-tune the fit, not to correct major size mismatches.

Fire Doors and Glazed Doors: Do Sizes Change?

A common concern is whether choosing a fire-rated or glazed door restricts your size options. With LPD, the answer is reassuringly simple… Most fire doors and glazed doors are available in the same size ranges as standard internal doors.

LPD fire doors are generally available in standard sizes ranging from 1981mm to 2040mm in height, and 457mm to 926mm in width. The thickness is where it differs, with thicknesses typically at 44mm for FD30 rated doors or 54mm for FD60 models.

This means you can mix and match door types throughout your home without disrupting proportions or layout. For example, you might choose fire doors for hallways and stairwells, glazed doors for living areas and solid doors for bedrooms, all while keeping sizes consistent.

Choosing The Right Size for Each Room

Different rooms place different demands on door sizing. As a general guide:

  • Bedrooms and bathrooms often work best with 686mm or 762mm widths
  • Living rooms and open-plan areas benefit from wider doors, such as 762mm or 838mm
  • Utility rooms and cupboards can use narrower widths where space is tight

The goal is to balance practicality with visual flow. Using consistent heights throughout the home, even if widths vary slightly, helps create a more connected look.

Measuring Before You Order: A Simple But Crucial Step

Before ordering any LPD doors, measure the existing door opening, not the old door leaf. Take measurements for height, width and thickness, and check them at multiple points to account for uneven frames.

Allow for small clearance gaps when fitting and remember that floors, especially newly laid ones, can affect final door height. Spending a few extra minutes measuring accurately can save hours of adjustment later.

Why LPD Door Sizes Work So Well for UK Homes

LPD’s approach to sizing is rooted in real-world installation. By offering a broad range of standard sizes, sensible trimming allowances and consistent availability across door styles, LPD makes it easier to plan, fit and finish an interior without unnecessary complications.

Whether you’re updating a single room or coordinating doors across an entire property, choosing the right size upfront is one of the simplest ways to achieve a perfectly polished result.
